A range of circumstances has prompted Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to issue a warning regarding potential coastal flooding for the Metro Vancouver area. This advisory comes as the South Coast enters a phase of significant astronomical tides, coinciding with the Earth reaching its closest point to the sun, known as perihelion. ECCC describes these tides as "abnormal," highlighting their intensity.
In conjunction with these high tides, a low-pressure system is contributing to an elevated risk of minor to moderate flooding along the coastline of Metro Vancouver. As explained by ECCC, the decreasing atmospheric pressure in the region may result in higher water levels, intensifying the likelihood of floods along the coast.
This advisory is particularly relevant for this upcoming weekend, with Sunday being the day when the chances of coastal flooding are highest.
ECCC has noted that the precise trajectory and timing of the low-pressure system remain unpredictable at this time. The strength of the winds will depend largely on the positioning of the low-pressure center.
The agency further cautions that moderate winds coupled with storm surges can lead to debris being washed ashore and increased erosion in coastal areas. Consequently, there is a likelihood of minor to moderate flooding along shorelines that are particularly exposed, especially in lower-lying regions.
Additionally, ECCC warns of the possibility of “locally significant flooding,” especially in areas where onshore winds might exacerbate the impact of the highest tides.
Navigating roads and pathways could prove challenging due to potential flooding or debris, which may include driftwood and rocks brought in by the surf.
To complicate matters, Metro Vancouver might be facing wet weather conditions, as the latest forecast from ECCC indicates the likelihood of considerable rainfall over the coming week. Furthermore, there is even a chance of snowfall during this period, adding to the unpredictable weather scenario.
