From Hobbyist to Entrepreneur: How Kimberly Browne Transformed a DIY Project into a Thriving Jewelry Brand
Kimberly Browne, at just 23 years old, has expertly blended contemporary trends with genuine creativity in her jewelry designs, which are now available online and throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
It all began rather innocently when Kimberly, during her free time, started crafting stylish pearl necklaces for her friends. Little did she know that this would mark the inception of her burgeoning jewelry brand, which now proudly showcases its creations at various vendor markets and retail outlets across Ontario.
As a child growing up in Aurora, Browne exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. "My parents have always told me that I was eager to explore new ventures and try different things," she recalled.
When the pandemic lockdown began, Kimberly seized the opportunity to delve deeper into her creative pursuits. Equipped with a set of pliers and a modest jewelry-making kit, she began experimenting with unique designs, often using herself and her sister as models to document her artistic journey.
Having been raised in Aurora, Browne was a track athlete with the Newmarket Huskies and graduated from Aurora High School before heading off to Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo to study communications in 2020. It was during her time at university that her determination to establish her jewelry business, aptly named Bling by Browne, intensified. She took to social media platforms (check it out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blingbybrowne/?hl=en) to promote her work and actively participated in local vendor markets and entrepreneurial clubs.
"I made sure to explore every opportunity I could find, which allowed me to cultivate a vibrant community of fellow entrepreneurs around me," Browne shared.
Now, a year post-graduation and currently working in public relations, Browne is diligently expanding her brand. She is focusing on selling her fashionable pieces online, as well as at vendor markets in Toronto and various shops across Kitchener-Waterloo and the GTA—one notable location being Newmarket's Dark Horse Espresso Bar.
A particularly fulfilling aspect of building Bling by Browne has been witnessing customers proudly wearing her creations, something Browne cherishes deeply. The supportive network she built at Laurier has been instrumental in her journey, helping her reach her current level of success.
"Having a close-knit community to rely on is invaluable, especially when you're running a business largely on your own. You need to be able to access your resources effectively," Browne emphasized.
Adaptability and responsiveness to customer preferences, while still maintaining her unique style, have been crucial to Browne's success. One of her recent best sellers features a necklace adorned with a hammered antique silver star pendant, inspired by the jewelry she discovered during a four-month backpacking adventure across Southeast Asia earlier last year.
"Trends shift so rapidly these days; you need to know when to make adjustments. It’s essential to stay true to your personal style while also aligning with current trends," Browne noted.
Currently, gold jewelry, particularly hoop earrings and chunky designs, is experiencing a surge in popularity. Browne also mentioned that her creations often combine various metal finishes and beadwork. To source distinctive materials for her products, she conducts thorough research, frequently seeking out small Canadian artisans. Interestingly, the star-shaped charms featured in her popular necklaces are imported from Turkey.
Balancing her solo jewelry venture alongside corporate responsibilities presents its challenges, but Browne views her side projects and entrepreneurial hustles as essential to her livelihood. Looking ahead, Kimberly hopes to expand her reach by getting her jewelry into additional local stores in Newmarket and Aurora.
But here's where it gets controversial: as the demand for personalized and trend-driven accessories continues to rise, how will emerging designers like Browne navigate the competitive landscape? Are they prepared to face the challenges of scaling their businesses while staying true to their creative vision? Share your thoughts in the comments!
