A tragedy has unfolded on a South Australian highway, sparking a death in custody investigation after a fatal crash. This somber event involves a 33-year-old man who died following a police pursuit. Let's delve into the details of this heartbreaking incident.
On Saturday, the man, who was allegedly evading police, crashed his car on the Eyre Highway. The vehicle, a blue Ford sedan reported stolen from Port Augusta, had been involved in a petrol drive-off earlier that day. Police initiated their involvement around 10:30 am, and the tragic outcome occurred hours later.
The car's journey involved high speeds, reaching up to 180 kilometers per hour, and a police helicopter tracking its movements. Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott confirmed that the Internal Investigation Section of SA Police is now involved. This is because the man was actively trying to avoid police apprehension.
"It falls into the definition of a death in custody — what that means is, we have additional layers of investigation that occur in these circumstances," Parrott explained. This includes a coronial investigation and an internal review of police actions.
But here's where it gets controversial... The initial pursuit after the petrol drive-off was quickly called off due to the man's dangerous driving. Later, police spotted the car heading towards Whyalla, continuing onto Iron Knob Road and then west on the Eyre Highway towards Kimba. The Assistant Commissioner stated that the erratic driving behavior necessitated intervention, balancing the need to apprehend the man with the safety of everyone on the road.
Around 2:40 pm, the man stopped at a roadside rest stop. Police in an unmarked vehicle deployed road spikes. As the man got back into the car and drove off, narrowly missing an officer, he crashed less than two kilometers down the highway. Despite CPR attempts, the man died at the scene.
The man was known to the police, who were looking for him in relation to domestic violence and other issues. The Eyre Highway, closed between Iron Knob and Kimba, has since reopened.
